Jeff Hendricks was commuting to work, as he usually does Tuesday morning, when he was hit by a car. His injury is very serious. His femur was crushed along with other minor injuries. Thibodaux General said they were unable to deal with his injury. So he was transferred to University Hospital in NOLA yesterday. I spoke with Debbie, his wife this morning and she said he is in pain. They hope to operate today, if the doctor is available.
Please pray for Jeff and his family.
I plan to call the reporter @ the Comet and ask him to do a story on this. We all run the roads and know how dangerous it can be. Be safe and don't take any chances. Even if a car sees us they may not respect our rights to be on the road.
Jeff was wearing a safety vest. He also runs front and back lights. Please consider wearing bright clothes and/or a vest. Blinking lights, whatever you have. It didn't spare him, but it often makes a difference. I may look like a dork with the lights and bright colors, but since wearing them, I've noticed that cars often respect me more. Many times while a car is overtaking, they will get entirely in the other lane. They didn't do that much before.

It's me, Jeff. Got hit by a car Tuesday morning going to work. Massive thigh fracture, but thank God no other complications that I know of. Surgery went from 10: till 3:30 Wednesday. I've heard the bike is okay (and I bet the LHT left a massive dent on that car's hood!) but I won't be discharged from the trauma center in N.O. until later this week. I won't have more details, but I can use allll the prayers I can get!

Just spoke with Jeff. He is in the process of being discharged and will be home tonight. He looks forward to sleeping in his own bed. His recovery will take months, but he is in good spirits.

Came home last night around 6:00, felt extremely, tired, but I'm already felling much better than I was even 3 days ago. Surgery went better than expected, they (and I) are hoping for a full recovery eventually. I haven't even gotten a chance to look at my bike yet, but I've been offered a tadpole trike and clipless pedals to borrow until my leg is up to speed. I have no doubt that if I wasn't already in good shape, it would have been a lot worse. I'm going back in 2 weeks for a post-op eval, I'll give you guys more info when I get there.
Just to give you guys a synopsis: left femur was shattered so bad the Ortho specialist at Thibodaux Regional looked at the CT scans and said "I'm not touching that, he needs to go to Univeristy" and they trucked me to LSU Medical center that night, with my loose leg still strapped to the gurney sideways. Surgery wounds have cleaned up extremely nicely, and look tons better than I thought they would. Wound vaccuums (I know, who'd have thought of that?) sped up the process by a few days at least, I was shocked at how good they looked after only 3 days. No other injuries to speak of... absolutely none. Some people told me my bike even looked ridable... I will certainly get the frame and fork checked for cracks before I try it. No single part on that bike cost more than $40 except the frameset, so if the trucker frame isn't tweaked, it's all good! Tons and tons of thanks for support from everybody in the club who either visited, called, or prayed for me. I appreciate it, that's what friends are for! Don't fret, my mileage goals may be shot for the year, but I will come back again, stronger than before. Be safe, and keep on riding! |
